Swimming is great exercise for all ages, not just lifeguards on the beach. It has a lot of benefits, and here's just a few of those:
-It's a cardiovascular exercise which means that it'll greatly increase your metabolism (hence weight loss at the beginning of a season and weight gain at the end). It'll also give you better overall stamina just like running.
-Swimming is easy on joints and other body connections making it a prime selection of exercise for those with arthritis. Since swimming is light on joints and generally easy it's a sport for people of all ages and abilities.
-It can be a great way to meet people. Since a lot of people swim you can meet lots of people from various swimming programs. People are always talkative in the lockerrooms and have some general gossip or information to share. It's really fun and it'll introduce you to some new people as well.

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise. Because the density of the human body is approximately similar to that of water, the body is supported by the water and less stress is therefore placed on joints and bones. Therefore, swimming is frequently used as an exercise in rehabilitation after injuries or for those with disabilities.
Resistance swimming is one form of swimming exercise. It is done either for training purposes, to hold the swimmer in place for stroke analysis, or to enable swimming in a confined space for athletic or therapeutic reasons. Resistance swimming can be done either against a stream of moving water (often termed a swimming machine) or by holding the swimmer stationary with elastic attachments.
Swimming is primarily an aerobic exercise due to the long exercise time, requiring a constant oxygen supply to the muscles, except for short sprints where the muscles work anaerobically. As with most aerobic exercise it is believed to reduce the harmful effects of stress.

I love to swim.
Swimming is a great excercise, and I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy it. It's just simply a lot of fun to just be able to be underwater and just swim around, and while your doing this you get lots of excercise.
Swimming is considered by many a good way to relax, while enjoying a good full-body workout.

It's like a "free" shower.
1) you get exercise, it's a type of cardiovascular exercise.
2) you use nearly all the muscles in your body
3) it helps tone your body because of the point above
4) it's refreshing - when you do land exercise, you have to sweat, and thus become hot. but swimming, you sweat but you won't notice, and the water is relatively cool which will lower your temp.
5) it is a type of relaxation - you can let your thoughts wander while effortlessly swimming back and forth.
6) IT'S WONDERFUL
