If you swim at all, you should be able to do a 500 yard freestyle in at least under 8 minutes. I'm not even a distance swimmer and I can swim it in about 6 minutes. You can work on your endurance by practicing distance frequently and by doing dry land exercises. In the actual race you can't sprint your fist few laps, or you'll get tired very quickly. Go at pace that you know you can keep up. Then begin build up more speed in the last 200 yards. In the last 75 yards, sprint all out

For breaststroke, do not make a continuous movement along with your hands. Pull as your legs are becoming ready, and as you kick prolong forward along with your hands and flow. To place it in point of view for a 500 in 14 minutes, that signifies that approach that you've 42 seconds for each and every length (one time across) of the pool. Simply get your stroke effective adequate, and you must be simply excellent. Incidentally TWH Rider, nobody is even close to swimming a mile in 12 minutes. The world document for the 1,500 (not even a mile) is set 14 and a half minutes.

Do more freestyle sets. They'll help you. You should be able to swim a 500 free under 8 mins.

Practice, and maybe shave your body, hair can slow you down.
