I am a certified PADI Open Water Diver, and hoping to get recertified as an advanced open water diver soon. You have to make a certain amount of dives, and one of the required is a deep dive. I was wondering if anyone knew the official depth of a deep dive? THANKS!

Your deep dive part of the AOW will be to around 110-120 feet, as a rule, depending on location. You'll be given some mental tasks to do, like writing your name backwards or some math. I disagree with the previous poster in that anything over 60 is a deep dive. PADI defines it as 18 M to 40 M but it's It's all relative to your current training and the agency you cert with. IANTD techies START at that depth. I believe he's thinking about how deep you are certified to, not what is considered a deep dive For example, myself. 130 feet is not a deep dive, it's deeper than recreational scuba, but not deep as a tech diver It's all relative.

Amongst most recreational divers AOW, you'll find their definition of deep to be in the 100-130 foot range. For OW a deep dive is anytime they get their feet wet.

Hey, scubabob, be nice! I'm only OWD, but I don't consider every dive I make a deep dive! ;) I remember the weekend I did my checkout dives; I thought 30 feet was scary. Now, 30 or 40 feet are no big deal! Of course, that's not in your league at all, but I don't harbor any ambitions to be a tech or commercial diver, I just want to have a good time.

Actually, the deep dive is 60 feet or below; in fact, I did my deep dive towards my advanced this past weekend at Gilboa Quarry. However, having said that, I will be honest by admitting that I don't feel comfortable diving deep yet... just because I was below 60 feet for a few minutes doesn't seem to me to be enough to count it as a deep dive, although it DOES count and the instructor signed off on it in my logbook. I hope to do some more deep dives, to the point where I feel as comfortable below 60 feet as I do at 40, for instance.

A deep dive is considered anything over 60 feet. I know this as I take newbie divers with me and I am not allowed to take them below 60 ft unless they have AOW.

"groverraj" is correct as far as PADI Standards are concerned.

Any depth deeper than 60 feet is considered a deep dive.

PADI, if I remember correctly, call anything over 60 ft (@ 2 atmospheres) a 'deep' dive.

In NAUI, Basic Openwater is appropriate for dives of up to 70'. In Advanced Openwater, you are qualified for "deep dives" (70' to 130'). See my reference, scroll down to Adv. SCUBA/Jr. Adv. SCUBA
