Spend some time surveying your needs. If you know what you want before hand you will have a better experience after the pool is installed. Questions to consider include size and depth of pool. How much decking. Do you have children? Will you be entertaining more adults. If it's an inground pool do you want an attached spa? How will the yard be landscaped? What about landscape lighting? There are lots of questions to be asked. And answered. Filling the yard with water leaves no sitting areas for adults. You will find that you spend 80% of your time sitting around the pool and 20% in the water. Kids are the reverse of that. Not enough decking is one common mistake made by most people. They never enjoy the pool the way they had imagined because they didn't plan the decking well. Make all these decisions before hand so your pool will become a room addition-- an outdoor room! Landscaping is very important. To fully enjoy a pool "experience" the new "room" should be tastefully decorated. Flower beds, or potted plants, greatly enhance the effect. As does nice muted lighting. Plan ahead.

1) Talk to you insurance agent about additional liability on your house.
2) Build a fence or some other barrier to restrict acces to the pool area.
3) Consider the risk of owning a pool. There are more deaths per capita from drowning in a pool than there are death from accidental handgun shootings.
4) Calculate not just original purchase price but also maintence (clorine, water, heating, etc.).
