I'd like to take the snorkel under water with me.

My favorite is the Ocean Master Dry Snorkel. It has a float that keeps water from coming in when you submerge or a wave washes over your head. You might think the mechanism would interfere with breathing, but it doesn't. It has such a large bore it's really easy to breathe through.

Personally, I like a semi-dry snorkel with purge valve, several companies make good ones including ProBlue. They are cheaper to buy than dry snorkels and less bulky - so I find them easier to wear and submerge - but you do get some water inside. Waves will cause a little bit of water to get in, but it drips to to the purge valve area for easy clearing without getting any big gulps of water first. Submerging will allow more water in, so you blow air out at the surface to clear snorkel for breathing. Dry snorkels are a good option if you are really afraid of getting any water in. Whatever you buy, make sure it has a good purge valve at the lower end of the snorkel , this makes clearing so easy! Good quality, semi-dry snorkels typically run about $25.00-$40 and dry ones are usually more like $50-$60. Often you can get a good quality mask and snorkel set (with a semi-dry snorkel) for about $60-$75.00 if you are in the market for a mask too - but only go this option if the mask fits you properly, and you have to try it on, with help from a pro to be sure. Happy snorkeling!
