i weigh between 110-115 pounds and i'm female. i always swim 200 yards with the kickboard and the rest of the 1300 yards doing freestyle. i usually keep track by keeping a count in my head of each 100 yards. since i swim in a public gym, sometimes i have to take unwanted breaks between each lap because of people in front of me. i try to complete each 100 yards without stopping at the wall for longer than 1-3 seconds (can't do a flip turn). how many calories do you think i'm burning? is there an easier way to calculate this? thanks :]

In general, you use about 1 calorie for every 3 yards that you swim. Therefore, you'd be using around 500 calories.

1500 yards in an hour (4 minutes per 100 yards) is really slow - even for kicking. Does your heart rate ever get elevated? Do you ever get out of breath? If you are simply drifting along at that pace, I don't see how you could be burning more than 200 calories an hour. There's nothing magic about swimming and calorie burning; if you don't feel like you are exerting yourself, you aren't.

Here is a Livestrong article that describes some of the variables involved:

There are numerous factors that determine the amount of calories being burned such as swimming stroke, intensity, and weight. The link below will provide a very useful chart to help you determine the number of calories you are burning.

Very few, because that's slower than Christmas. Even an average person should reasonably be able to do it in about half an hour.
