Hi, I just turned 16 and this summer my friends have been constantly asking me to go over and swim at their pools and cottages (lakes and etc..) Little do they know i can't swim. Growing up my doctors wouldn't let me take swimming classes because i had numerous health issues. I started taking a few private classes at the age of 12, mind you at that age most of my friends were still pretty strong swimmers... I would love to learn how to swim but i'm so shy tall and awkward I feel like i'd standout amongst all the other little midgets... Someone please give me advice it really sucks that i can't swim, and i really want to :(

Not knowing what your health problems were its difficult to give relevant advice but I was self taught at swimming at 19 and I went on to teach a pupil.

16 is not old for a learner but you have to find out what problems you have i.e. can you float easily,do you have a problem with going underwater and holding your breath etc

If it was me and I was invited to private pools I would go but you should tell your friends exactly what your problems with swimming are .You may get your swimming help and a private pool is the best place to learn.

Some adults have to take classes to learn should why should you be embarrassed? As you are keen you will learn quickly. Just do it.
