Question:
Would you go swimming with a 2 month old piercing?

I got the web of my hand pierced around 2 months ago. Its healing quite well but is still crusty and sometimes has a tiny bit of puss.
My friend just asked me to go swimming and I said yes but now I'm panicking about it getting infected.
She says chlorine is good for piercings.
Is this true?

Consider this...you've just opened a hole into your body that all kind of germs and bacteria would just LOVE to get into. Further, even if heavily chlorinated, all pools contain bacteria - and public pools contain so much you might as well be swimming in a sewer for all the good it will do your new piercing.

If you absolutely MUST go swimming...insure that you disinfect your piecing thoroughly right after you get out of the water.

I truly hope you don't intend listening to your friend. She's wrong; chlorine is the worst thing for piercings! Perhaps she got confused with swimming in the sea?

I'm from Greece and have quite a few piercings myself and the first thing I do once I get a piercing is go to the beach for a swim. The salt water helps cleanse the wound.

It sounds like your piercing hasn't fully healed yet and might in fact be a bit irritated considering its still letting out a bit of puss. You should wait until your piercing is fully healed before going to swim in a pool, that goes for your friend as well.

Chlorine can be good for piercings. I went swimming almost a week after I got my ears pierced, and I haven't had any complications since. Even if chlorine is "bad" for piercings, all you have to do when you're done is rinse it with clean water and put some hydrogen peroxide on it. (hydrogen peroxide is just basic wound cleaning stuff, it doesn't sting, just fizzes) Also, hydrogen peroxide IS an antiseptic. It does NOT close up the piercing. You can find it at any general store or pharmacy. It's usually in a brown bottle. Hope this helps- --Katie

Chlorine is NOT good for piercings because it dries them out. If you still want to go swimming make sure that you clean your piercing as soon as you get out of the water.

Chlorine kills 99 percent of germs etc. We had girls get their belly buttons pierced and get in the next day on swim team. It should be fine.

Is that comfortable?

Answer: Go ahead, the chlorine will not infect your peircing. In fact it's like a bleach, which is why it's mandatory for a public pool to use high amounts of it.

What the Fech, thumbs down!! For what?

yes, when you get a piercing you only have to wait 24 hours until you can get in the pool, or the ocean.

I think if you go swimming for a little while it will be okay, but not for too long or it could get infected.
