The more you exert yourself the more oxygen you consume. Try to relax when you are underwater.

from my xperience.. dun eat anything b4 u get into the water..this make more space for ur lung to expand.. when in water.. dun inhale too much of air.. this'll just make u feel tired faster.. try not to move too much while under water.. u use more oxygen when u move.. maintain ur heartbeat..

The urge to breath comes from the build up of CO2 in your body not the need for Oxygen. Two thinkgs you can do. first take a few really deep breaths in and out, before your dive. This slightly hyperventalates you and makes sure all CO2 is out of you body. Second if you feel the need to breath Exhale slowly. "blow bubbles" keep it controled. You will feel less like you need to breath. Be careful. There is a problem called shallow water black out. It comes from hyperventalating too much before you dive. So only take a few deep breaths.
